Common Oil Burner Problems & Safe DIY Solutions

Before calling a technician, check these common, simple issues. Being proactive can save you time and money. Remember: **Safety first!** If you smell oil or smoke, turn the system off immediately and call a professional.

1. The Burner Won't Start (No Heat)

This is the most common and alarming issue. Here’s what you can check safely:

  • Check Fuel Level: Is your oil tank empty? This is the easiest fix!
  • Check Power: Ensure the furnace switch (usually on the unit) and the **Emergency Red Switch** (often at the top of basement stairs) are both ON.
  • Check Thermostat: Is it set to "Heat"? Is the temperature set at least $5^{\circ}$ F to $10^{\circ}$ F higher than the room temperature?
  • The Reset Button: Locate the red reset button on the burner control box. **Press it ONCE only.** If the burner fires up for less than 60 seconds and then locks out again, **DO NOT press it a second time.** Repeated pressing can flood the combustion chamber with oil, creating a serious hazard. Call us immediately.

2. Poor Heat or Weak Airflow

If the burner runs but the house stays cold, airflow or distribution is often the cause.

  • Change the Air Filter: A clogged air filter is the #1 cause of inefficiency and poor airflow in forced-air systems. Check it monthly, and replace it every 1–3 months, especially during peak season.
  • Clear Vents & Furnace Area: Ensure all return air vents and supply registers are open and unobstructed by furniture or rugs. The area around the furnace should be clean and clutter-free.
  • Bleed Radiators (Boilers): If you have a boiler and notice cold spots on the top of your radiators, trapped air might be the issue. Use a radiator key to carefully release the air until water starts to trickle out.
  • Check Ductwork: Look for obvious leaks, disconnected joints, or damage in the visible ductwork.

3. Strange Noises or Odors

A furnace should hum, but loud or unusual sounds signal trouble.

  • Whistling or Hum: Often caused by restricted airflow (dirty filter) or the normal operation of the oil pump motor. If it's a new, loud whistle, check the filter first.
  • Squealing/Screeching: This can indicate a worn belt in the blower motor or bad motor bearings. **Turn off the system and call us.** This requires professional attention before component failure.
  • Strong Oil Odor: A slight scent is normal right after a service, but a strong, persistent odor is an emergency. This indicates a potential leak or incomplete combustion. **Turn off the burner and call Burner Service Inc. immediately.**
  • Smoke/Soot: Black smoke or heavy soot coming from the system means combustion is highly inefficient or a flue is blocked. **Turn off the system and call a technician right away.**

⚠️ Safety Warning: When to Call the Experts

DIY fixes are limited. Do not attempt electrical repairs, nozzle replacement, combustion chamber cleaning, or pump adjustments. **For any issue involving oil leakage, smoke, soot, or repeated failures, always contact licensed professionals like Burner Service Inc.**
